Columnist: Melancon to challenge Vitter in Louisiana's 2010 Senate race

Congressman Charlie Melancon
A Louisiana political columnist reports Democratic Congressman Charlie Melancon plans to run for the U.S. Senate next year against Republican incumbent Sen. David Vitter, according to The Times-Picayune.
John Maginnis, in his LaPolitics Weekly, said the 3rd District representative has told national Democratic campaign officials he will enter the race, the report states.
Vitter apologized after his telephone number appeared in the phone records of the woman dubbed the "D.C. Madam," Deborah Jeane Palfrey, making him the first member of Congress to become ensnared in the high-profile case.
Several other names have surfaced, including adult entertainer and Baton Rouge native Stormy Daniels.
